타액은 구강 뿐만 아니라 상부 호흡기 기능을 유지하는데 중요한 역할을 한다.
고령자 사회의 도래로 인하여 구강건조증， 캔디다증， 구강궤양， 구강작열감증후군， 미각장애， 다발성치아우식증， 치주질환， 구취와 같은 타액선 기능장애 관련질환은 증가하고 있으며 이를 치료하기 위한 기술 개발은 환자의 삶의 질 향상을 위해 중요한 의미를 가진다. 본 연구실에서는 타액 기능회복 기술개발을 통해 타액선 기능장애 관련질환을 예방/치료하기 위하여 인공타액 및 구강항균물질의 개발을 위한 다음과 같은 연구를 수행하고 있다.
